In order to achieve a club head speed of 90-100 mph, the body needs to recruit 90 percent of its musculature in bursts of movement. Not only does a golfer engage the core muscles of the body during a golf swing, but he or she also does it in an unnatural motion with increased rotation.

The technique of a golf swing requires the spine to rotate, bend to the side, and extend almost simultaneously. Many golfers develop pain in the “thoracolumbar junction” (area of the spine just below the rib cage) due to the fact that this area of the spine is not meant to bend sideways and rotate at the same time. Further complicating matters is that golf is a “one-sided” activity, meaning that the athlete swings in the same direction every time. This can cause muscular imbalances from tighter or overdeveloped muscles on one side versus the other. 75% of golfers suffer from golf related injuries at some point.

Regular golf-specific stretching routines combined with chiropractic spinal adjustments can restore range of motion and thus tremendously decreasing the risk of a golf injury, as well as improve your golf game.
In order to produce a powerful and precise swing, energy needs to be transferred from the lower limbs, up through the torso, and out to the shoulders and. Any interruption along this chain causes a loss of momentum, thus resulting in an inefficient and less powerful swing. Tight muscles, old injuries, and scar tissue decrease overall flexibility and limit performance.

Chiropractic care can support flexibility in the joints by maintaining proper alignment of the spine. If you are experiencing golf related injuries, or want to prevent injury, or would like to improve your golf game, come in to Livewell Family Chiropractic Center and ask Dr. French to design a custom care plan for you.

Chiropractic care is one of the most useful and safe types of health care available to senior adults.

As a person grows older, he or she typically faces more health-related issues. Many of those ailments and discomforts can be attributed to spinal misalignment. Everything from stiff joints to a heart condition is affected by the health of the spine. Seniors are commonly treated with pain medication, anti-inflammatories, blood-thinners, and diuretics, but these treatments only mask the symptoms and may cause undesirable complications. A chiropractor may be able to alleviate the problem by removing pressure on the central nervous system, allowing body function to operate more normally.

Studies show that when chiropractic care is offered to senior adults, they have fewer lingering complaints, spend less days in hospices and nursing houses, are significantly more active and mobile, and are likely to report regular levels of exercise than non-chiropractic patients. In fact, 87% of chiropractic patients described their health status as good to wonderful, compared against 68% of non-chiropractic patients.

Because of the dramatic changes that occur in the backbone with increasing age, chiropractic care is critical for senior adults. As we grow older, spinal discs, joints, ligaments, muscles and other spinal tissues become weaker, less hydrated, and less able to resist normal strain. After decades of wear and tear on the body, spinal pain becomes more prominent and injury may occur from minor trauma. Rheumatoid arthritis is a result of spinal degeneration, and once it sets in, cannot be reversed, but chiropractic care may help in pain management, maintaining function, and forestalling further degeneration.

There is no need for seniors to suffer futilely or pile on the prescription drugs. Chiropractic provides amazing benefits and has an impressive record of safety and efficacy. If you or someone you love suffers from the discomforts of an advanced age, come in to Livewell Family Chiropractic Center and ask Dr. French how chiropractic care can help.

Boost Brain-Body Coordination with Chiropractic

The brain is the master control system for the entire body. It sends and receives signals to and from every part of the body – signals that dictate the function of your body’s major systems. When there is interference in this neurological loop, it alters the environment of the brain and therefore your body’s healthy function. Chiropractic adjustments have been shown to enhance the sensorimotor integration of the brain with the body.

Research has demonstrated that chiropractic adjustments can increase the body’s ability to sense where it is in space and effectively coordinate complex movement patterns (sensorimotor integration). This improves function in both the brain and the body. Improved physical awareness translates into better physical and mental balance, coordination, and mobility.

Stress on the body may cause the interference in communication between the brain and body. Stress can come from a variety of sources but is categorized in one of three ways- chemical, mental, or physical stress. When the body is under increased stress it responds by increasing production of cortisol, which can cause ligament laxity. When ligaments loosen, it results in joint weakness throughout the body, including the spine and extremities, making them much more susceptible to misalignment, or “subluxations.”

Subluxation disrupts the proper neurological function of our bodies. Subluxations are caused by any one of the chemical, emotional or physical stresses. These include, but are not limited to, poor posture, physical trauma, improper nutrition and mental/emotional distress.

Chiropractic adjustments stop the stress response and restore normal communication through the nerves between the brain and body. Once the stress placed on the spinal nerves and been relieved, healthy function can return to the body and enhanced coordination and balance are perceived.

If you would like to boost your brain-body connection, come in to Livewell Family Chiropractic Center and ask Dr. French to design a custom care plan for you.

The functions of the body act together as a whole, and if one part is thrown off balance, the health of the whole body is influenced. Chiropractic care, therefore, works best when complemented with a healthy lifestyle and other natural health care practices.

Acupuncture, like chiropractic care, operates in the concept that the body must be balanced and that if one part isn't working properly, the effects are far-reaching. Acupuncture also uses different strategies to ensure that the muscles and skeletal system are properly aligned. It is a non-invasive, drug-free, hands-on therapy like chiropractic care and therapeutic massage. Because the practice of acupuncture and acupressure is so similar to chiropractic care in these ways, it is a natural choice to pair with a chiropractic care plan.

More chiropractors are being trained in the art of acupuncture and are providing it in their clinics. Recent articles in the Journal of the North American Chiropractic suggest that acupuncture is the ideal partner to chiropractic care to treat musculoskeletal injuries and ailments. Both therapies aim to fix the root of the discomfort rather than simply address the symptoms by clearing up blocked channels of communication in the nervous system.

If you suffer from chronic pain or illness, chiropractic care combined with acupuncture could be the ideal mix to help you onto a path of overall wellness and pain relief. Come in to Livewell Family Chiropractic Center and ask Dr. French if including acupuncture in your care plan could be beneficial to your recovery.

Perhaps other natural lifestyle practices also come to mind. One element that you may not consider is stretching.

Stretching is a crucial element of overall health that is often forgotten, but has significant advantages in preventing injury and promoting health. When practiced correctly and used in conjunction with different types of care, stretching can even help to correct injuries and ailments.

When the body is stretched properly both before and after exercise, it helps reduce the possibility of injury because muscle pulls and tears frequently occur is when a muscle or joint is stiff before suddenly being propelled into action. When you stretch, the muscle is gradually loosened and prepared for action. Stretching also increases the flow of fluids to the joints, which can help prevent the cartilage from drying out and becoming subject to fissures.

It is important to stretch for ten to 15 minutes prior to beginning vigorous activity. Warm your muscles up with a short walk or jogging in place, then gently stretch each muscle with a steady (not bouncing) pressure.
Another benefit to stretching is that it can help to properly align the body and so promote better overall health. Misalignment in the spine is can be caused by shortened or stiff muscles that have pulled the joints out of place. Regular stretching helps those muscles stay pliant and relieves the discs of some of the pressure they experience from life’s daily activities.

There are several ways to stretch the backbone, including lying flat on the floor and stretching your legs and arms in opposite directions. You can then slowly pull each knee to the chest, stretching out the muscles in your lower back. After releasing the legs back down, you can support the neck and slowly lean in forward, off the ground. If you are at work and cannot utilize the floor, do variances of these stretches while standing up and stretching every few hours.

Stretching is crucial to overall health and can be done at any fitness level and by even the busiest of people. He wondered how these patients got better without drugs or surgery, so he planned a unique experiment: he would dissect human and animal cadavers and see if there was a relationship between the health of the spine and any diseased organs he found.

The University of Pennsylvania gave Dr. Winsor permission to carry out his experiments. In a series of three studies, he dissected a total of 75 human and 22 cat cadavers, finding 221 diseased organs. But was there a relationship between those diseased organs and the condition of the spine? Dr. Winsor wrote:

“[Of the 221 diseased organs] 212 were observed to belong to the same sympathetic [nerve] segments as the vertebrae in curvature… These figures cannot be expected to exactly coincide…for an organ may receive sympathetic filaments from several spinal segments.”

In other words, Dr. Winsor found a nearly 100% correlation between “minor curvatures” of the spine and disease of the internal organs! Meaning that each of the locations of distorted spinal curvature, or “subluxation,” housed the nerve that served the organ in distress. When the subluxation compromised the nerve supply to the organ, it became diseased.

For example, in Dr. Winsor’s study, all twenty cases of heart conditions had misalignment in the upper five thoracic vertebrae. All twenty-six cases of lung disease were misaligned in the upper thoracic. All thirteen cases of liver disease had spinal misalignments in the mid thoracic. All seventeen cases of kidney disease had misalignments in the lower thoracic vertebrae. All eight cases of prostate and bladder conditions were misaligned in the lumbar vertebrae. These are just a small sampling of the correlations found.

Dr. Winsor’s insights and research have been expanded on by scientists in many disciplines, and this field is one of the fastest-growing and most exciting areas of research in the healthcare sciences. Chiropractors and traditional osteopaths continue to observe patients recovering from nearly every disease known under spinal care.

The nerves connecting your internal organs to your spine must remain free of spinal stress in order to function properly. If these nerved are constricted because of spinal misalignment, your health will suffer. You may not develop disease symptoms right away, because most often the organ is slowly weakened by the diminished nerve supply. Why wait until you have a heart, lung, kidney, or liver problem before you get your spine checked for subluxations that could be causing nerve stress? Come see Dr. French at Livewell Family Chiropractic Center for a personalized care plan.

Is it really necessary? Does it really work?

We are living in a world with increasing environmental toxins. Even if you do your best to avoid toxic substances and harmful chemicals, you can’t escape exposure completely.

Thankfully, our bodies are constantly eliminating as many undesirable toxins as possible. The body’s main detoxification organs are the liver, colon, kidneys, gallbladder, lungs, skin, lymph, and blood, and those systems are usually working overtime to combat all the dangerous things that pollute our bodies.

When you purposefully aid your body in detoxifying, you lessen the burden on your internal systems. While you assist the natural cleansing process of your body by following a detox diet and lifestyle, you are helping conserve energy that your organs would normally expend on flushing poisons. Without this undue stress on your bodily functions, your system can focus on more important things like fighting cancer and degenerative diseases, restoring health, increasing vitality, and repairing the damage in our body.

Even a mild detox can result in increased energy, enhanced athletic performance, easier weight loss, clear skin, shinier hair, faster healing, and an improved sense of well-being.

Do you feel sluggish and tired no matter how much rest you get? Have you tried unsuccessfully to lose weight, even when you eat healthy and exercise? Perhaps your body’s is under too much stress from its natural cleansing process.
In this case study a 23-year-old woman went to a chiropractor five months after suffering a slip and fall accident. It was reported that the woman had slipped in her bedroom and hit her head on the floor. At the time of the accident she was treated at the emergency room and was diagnosed with a concussion.
It was noted that she had previously suffered with headaches for 10 years prior to the fall. After suffering the concussion the woman's headaches had gotten worse, and she was also experiencing vertigo (dizziness), nausea, and a throbbing pain in her neck. After the accident she also reported having fatigue, irritability, insomnia, memory problems, and problems with concentration. Her problems were so severe that it was affecting her daily life.
A chiropractic examination was performed and numerous positive findings were noted indicative of vertebral subluxation in the upper neck. X-rays of the upper neck verified misalignment of the upper neck and a determination of upper cervical (neck) subluxation was made. Based on these findings a course of specific chiropractic care was initiated to correct the problem.
Within one week of starting chiropractic care the patient reported that she had not experienced any headaches or vertigo after receiving her first adjustment. Follow up x-rays and examination procedures showed improvement of the upper neck as well. Two weeks after the start of care she was experiencing some occasional slight mild headaches, but the other symptoms had disappeared. Ultimately, the woman was actually healthier at the conclusion of this case study than she was prior to the accident.
This case is not isolated. Others have found relief from concussion, headaches, and vertigo through carefully customized chiropractic care, and so can you. If you or someone you love suffers from these conditions, come into Livewell Family Chiropractic Center and talk to Dr. French about how chiropractic can help.
Doctors of chiropractic can implement a broad range of techniques that aid in restoring proper alignment, motion, and function by removing any interference to the nervous system.

In a healthy spine, the individual segments of the spine, the vertebrae, are carefully “stacked” and aligned so the various nerves from the spinal cord are free to function properly. A misalignment of one bone in the spine in relation to the next is called a subluxation.

A subluxation may interfere with proper nerve function when nerve signals cannot flow freely to and from the brain. This can result in potentially improper function of a gland, organ muscle, or tissues controlled by those nerves.

Subluxations are more common than you think, because it is very difficult to avoid the cause of misalignments—stress. Any form of stress on your body—whether physical or emotional—can trigger a subluxation in the spine. Repetitive motion, improper lifting, and poor posture can cause physical stress on the spine and nervous system. Emotional stress can create tension, causing the ligaments and muscles to tighten. No matter where the stress comes from, it can contribute to the development of a subluxation.

This is why chiropractic care is so helpful for such a variety of discomfort and dis-ease, and why it is such a critical part of any health care regimen. For a customized care plan, come in to Livewell Family Chiropractic Center and discuss your personal health issues with Dr. French.
Most are looking for stretches or physical exercises that may help speed their recovery or maintain the corrected subluxations. While certain postures and exercise can support chiropractic care, one of the best things you can do for the health of your spine starts on your with what you eat.

Proper nutrition is foundational to maintaining a healthy spine, and therefore healthy nerve supply and function. When your body is nourished, it promotes overall health and provides the human body with the building blocks for tissue repair, helping reestablish proper function in the spine. The body can more efficiently heal itself when it is fed all the nutrients it needs to restore health.

A healthy diet consists of mainly whole foods, plenty of fruits and vegetables, and minimal refined sugars, flours, and fats. To further support your health, whole food and herbal supplements may be added to your diet to ensure well-rounded nutrition and maximize the benefits of your chiropractic care plan.

Identifying nutrient challenges is critical, because deficiencies can affect spinal stability, which in turn negatively affects the nervous system. A balanced diet goes a long way toward preventing deficiencies, but even someone with a healthy diet can be lacking certain vital nutrients. To guard against deficiencies, consider including a high-quality multi-vitamin in your daily routine. If you are concerned that you may not be getting enough of certain vitamins and minerals, you can easily have your levels checked with a simple blood test.

Take charge of your health and help make the most of your chiropractic care plan by diligently keeping a wholesome diet for yourself and your family. Ask Dr. French for advice about nutrition and whole foods supplements.

Psychiatrist Peter Breggin wrote, "Hyperactivity is the most frequent justification for drugging children. The difficult-to-control male child is certainly not a new phenomenon, but attempts to give him a medical diagnosis are the product of modern psychology and psychiatry.”1

The dramatic rise in the number of children diagnosed with ADHD is startling and concerning. The number of prescriptions written for methylphenidate (Ritalin) has increased by a factor of five since 1991. The production of Adderall and Dexedrine, also used to treat ADHD, has risen 2,000% in nine years.2,3
But drugs may not be the answer to hyperactive children. Consider this excerpt from a recently published article:

Chiropractor refutes approaches to ADHD By JESSICA COHEN
Community News Writer, Pocono Record
June 17, 2011

“Doctors nowadays would likely diagnose Einstein with attention deficit disorder,” says chiropractor Dr. Susan Cunico. The symptoms include "constant talking, inattention, fidgeting, and blurting out," said Cunico, who practices in Sandyston, N.J. But many children who have those symptoms are quite bright and symptoms can have varied causes, she said. In fact, they may fall within the spectrum of normal childhood behavior.
Cunico said children often use the ADHD diagnosis as an excuse for their behavior. "Now that you've labeled them, they think it's okay to be bad," Cunico said. However, mainstream research has not found a physiological basis for ADHD.
She criticizes the common medical practice of using drugs such as Ritalin and Adderall to treat symptoms attributed to ADHD. "Ritalin is a schedule II drug like cocaine," she said. "It's a narcotic," noting one of the drug's nicknames is "kiddie cocaine.” In the 1990s, Novartis lobbied to make ADHD drugs available over the counter, but in an overview of the research, looking at 55 independent measures of academic success, no benefit for academic success resulted from the drugs.
Cunico added that some behavioral problems can be attributed to allergies or chemical imbalances, and says she has had success in treating behavioral issues as a chiropractor.

While chiropractors do not really "treat" ADD/ADHD, the effects of chiropractic care on children diagnosed with learning disorders and hyperactivity have been described in a growing body of scholarly publications.

A study published in 1975 compared chiropractic care with drug treatment in children with learning and behavioral impairments due to neurological dysfunction. It was reported that chiropractic care "was more effective for the wide range of symptoms common in the neurological dysfunction syndrome in which thirteen symptom or problem areas were considered." The author also reported that chiropractic care was 24% more effective than commonly used medications.4

Giesen at al conducted a study involving subjects of school age with clinical findings of vertebral subluxations. Following chiropractic care, 57% showed an improvement in chiropractic radiographic findings; 71.4% showed a reduction in overt behavior activity; 57% showed improvement in level of autonomic activity, and 57% showed improvement in parental ratings of hyperactivity.5

The dramatic changes that have been reported in children medically diagnosed with ADD/ADHD following chiropractic care must not be ignored.6,7,8,9

Every child with a spinal misalignment needs chiropractic care, regardless of whether or not symptoms are present. By correcting nerve interference, function is improved, physically and behaviorally. Many report terminating drug therapy, and seeing the personality of the child unfold. If you are concerned about a very active child, don’t hesitate to make an appointment with Dr. French before resorting to drug therapies.
Is it possible that chiropractic care is just as beneficial for your baby’s little body as it is for yours?

The birthing process is a physically traumatic event for your little bundle of joy. His or her tiny body has been placed under tremendous pressure moving through the birth canal, and that can cause places of misalignment in their developing spine. Chiropractors are specially trained to check an infant’s spine for areas of distortion that may cause nerve damage.

You do so many things to ensure your baby’s health: you eat right during pregnancy and avoid cigarettes and alcohol, you try to breastfeed so that your baby has superior nutrition, you explore drug-free options whenever possible. In short, you would do anything to foster your new child’s physical, intellectual, and emotional development. Why not have your baby’s spine checked? A simple spinal checkup can make a big difference to your child’s health for the rest of his or her life.

When does a baby need a spinal checkup? According to the chiropractic specialist Larry Webster, there are six pivotal times in a baby’s first year of life when spinal examinations are especially important: after birth, and then when the baby starts to hold up his/her head, sit up, crawl, stand, and walk.

Additionally, be sure to visit your chiropractor if your baby is experiencing any concerning symptoms such as colic, difficulty breast-feeding, ear/nose/throat infection, allergies, trouble sleeping, or projectile vomiting. All of these conditions have been shown to respond to chiropractic care, as well as disorders such as Erb’s palsy (limp arm) and torticollis (twisted neck).1,2

Give your baby the best possible chance to have a healthy life. Just as you would have your child’s eyes, heart, and hearing checked—bring your child in for a spinal exam. Dr. French has plenty of experience giving exams and adjustments to infants, babies, and toddlers…including his own three.
This week we’ll expand on the numerous ways that chiropractic can help the health issues women face.

For over a century, women have turned to the safe, natural, non-surgical and drug-free approach for their healthcare concerns. But can chiropractic adjustments really help with gynecological problems such as PMS, cramps, bloating, menopause symptoms, poor sexual response, infertility, and other reproductive concerns?

Over the years, many women suffering from gynecological problems have turned to chiropractic care for trouble with infertility, pelvic pain, hot flashes, irritability, depression, back or joint pain, headache, fatigue, lack of menstrual function, and other conditions associated with a woman’s reproductive system. 1,2,3

One researcher observes: “Various disturbances in pelvic organ function have been successfully managed by chiropractic…symptoms [include] bladder, bowel, gynecologic, and sexual dysfunction…”4

For a woman’s reproductive system to be healthy, her ovaries, uterus, cervix, glands, and related structures need a healthy nerve supply from the brain and spinal cord. Vertebral subluxations (misalignments in the spine) can cause these organs to not function properly, and can even result in disturbances in body chemistry and hormone production.

Regular chiropractic adjustments can help women avoid risky (and usually unnecessary) surgeries or potentially dangerous hormone therapies.5,6 Hysterectomies can lead to back and joint pain, loss of stamina and libido, urinary incontinence, memory loss, and more.7 HRT has been linked to everything from breast cancer to heart disease to dementia.8 In the event that a woman is suffering from disorders caused by these therapies, chiropractic can help alleviate the negative effects.

All organs, including those in the reproductive system, need a healthy nerve supply. An aligned structural system is essential for a healthy reproductive system. It is vital for all women to have checkups by a doctor of chiropractic to ensure reproductive health. Visit Livewell Family Chiropractic Center and talk to Dr. French about a personalized care plan.

Their family joyfully welcomed a healthy, beautiful baby boy on November 22nd. Like many other expectant women, Mrs. French enjoyed the comfort of body and mind that comes with pre-natal chiropractic adjustments.

Chiropractors are trained to give spinal care to pregnant women, and it is safe and beneficial right up through labor. Carol Phillips, DC, who specializes in care of pregnant and birthing mothers, says, “So many women who receive care during pregnancy say to us: ‘How in the world do other women get through pregnancy without [chiropractic] adjustments?’ ”

A pregnant woman needs her body to be as healthy and strong as possible in order to handle the rigors of pregnancy and childbirth. Chiropractic care helps ensure that all body systems function properly, including the reproductive system. The health of the uterus, ovaries, and related organs and structures is essential for a healthy pregnancy.

If the structure of the body is causing even the slightest nerve interference to these systems, it could adversely affect the mother and the developing fetus. A chiropractor can examine your expectant body for locations of misalignment in the spine, known as subluxations, which cause nerve stress, and correct them with a gentle adjustment.

The benefits of prenatal chiropractic care are far-reaching. Adjustments during pregnancy can help alleviate morning sickness,1 relieve back pain,2 prevent premature contractions and back labor,3,4 avoid Cesarean deliveries,5 normalize problems such as toxemia,6 correct breech positioning,7 shorten labor, and even ease post-partum depression.8

This drugless approach to care pregnancy and birth has none of he risks or side effects of medication during this critical developmental time for the infant. Chiropractic can help ensure the health and comfort of both mother and baby. And even beyond birth, chiropractic adjustments help both mother and newborn recover from the physical toll of childbirth.
If you are expecting, come in to Livewell Family Chiropractic Center and talk to Dr. French about a personalized pre-natal care plan.

While mental stress can certainly take a physical toll, that is not the kind of pressure that we are talking about today.

Did you know that your body is under pressure at all times, even if you are not subjecting it to strenuous activities? The weight of gravity, poor posture, low-impact movement, and just living and breathing all exact varying levels of compression on your spine.

“Miniscule amounts of pressure on a nerve root (equal to a feather falling on the hand), resulted in up to a 50 percent decrease in electrical transmission down the course of the nerve supplied by that root,” reported Chung Ha Suh, Ph.D., in reference to the results of a research project with his team at the University of Colorado.1

The pressure and compromised nerve impulses he described results in a biomechanical misalignment that causes a domino effect: the abnormal pressure exerted on the nerve root causes interference in the brain’s communication with tissue cells, which causes any organ that is served by that nerve to suffer.

This is why regular chiropractic adjustments are so important to your health. It doesn’t take an accident, injury, or high-impact sports to cause misalignment of the spine. You may have subluxations caused by sitting at your desk all day long. Come in to Livewell Family Chiropractic Center today, and let Dr. French help you keep your spine, and therefore your whole body, aligned and well.

Chiropractor In Frederick, Dr. Steve Digles, Provides Pain Relief For Fibromyalgia Sufferers

The New Life Chiropractic Center and Dr. Steve Digles DC, Frederick chiropractor offers effective therapeutic measures for alleviating the symptoms of fibromyalgia.

The New Life Chiropractic Center and Dr. Steve Digles DC, Frederick chiropractor, are pleased to announce effective and non-invasive fibromyalgia solutions for local residents. Fibromyalgia is a chronic disease characterized by multiple tender points, muscle pain and fatigue that affects as many as six million people in the U. S. The condition is much more common in women than in men.

According to Digles, "Fibromyalgia is caused by a stress-induced change in metabolism and has a slow, insidious onset, usually beginning in early adulthood." He continues, "The condition is a chronic one, but doesn't cause damage to internal organs, joints or muscles."

Symptoms include pain in all four quadrants of the body, sleep disturbances, headaches, painful menstrual periods and irritable bowel syndrome. Some women experience morning stiffness, restless leg syndrome and cognitive issues.

Therapy consists of nutritional and behavioral changes to relieve stress and improve muscle and nerve function. Individuals with the condition have a protein buildup in the muscles and connective tissues that interferes with the ability to repair itself. Specific therapy is directed at keeping the muscles supple. This might include massage or spinal adjustments to keep the alignment corrected.

Success stories from chiropractic care are common. Let Dr. French help you create your own health success story. Come see us at Livewell Family Chiropractic Center today!

Regular chiropractic adjustments can also enhance performance and prevent future injuries. Many athletes rely on it as a tool to support the proper structure and function of their skeletal and muscular system.

Professional athletes use the services of a chiropractic doctor to stay healthy despite the intense physical demands of their sports. Lance Armstrong, a seven-time Tour de France winner, and Jerry Rice, a three-time Super Bowl champion, both used chiropractic adjustments to keep their bodies in top shape.

A 2002 study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physical Therapeutics reported that 31 percent of National Football League teams include chiropractors on their staff. Maintaining a properly aligned skeletal and nervous system means that an athlete’s body can recover more quickly from the rigors of the high-impact sport.

Sports injuries are more likely when subluxations, or misaligned vertebrae, cause interference in the electrical impulses between the brain and tissue cells. “Improper spinal alignment creates muscular imbalances and nerve interferences, says Doctor of Chiropractic Jeff Ludwick. Nerve endings become inflamed and muscle performance suffers in the areas that the nerve serves.

Research reported in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine and The Physician and Sportsmedicine indicates that chiropractic sports science helps find and correct the underlying causes, and thus helps prevent and heal injuries.1

Dr. Nicole Galiette, marathon runner and owner of Chiropractic & Rehabilitation Center in Cheshire, Connecticut, believes “anyone that pushes their body hard needs to be in proper alignment, to keep the muscular system balanced.” She helps guard her athlete clients from fatigue and physical stress that result from repetitive motions.

Anyone with an active, athletic lifestyle would benefit from chiropractic care. Come in to Livewell FCC and let Dr. French help you boost your athletic performance.

For those that participate, today’s the day that people dress up in their most creative costumes for Halloween. Each year brings a new trend of popular costumes, but for chiropractors the selection is a bit more selective, for practical purposes. Below is a humorous list of costumes that you would most likely NOT want to see on Dr. French when you arrive for your adjustment.

1. Edward Scissorhands - The story of the gentle man who was created by an inventor who died before finishing his hands may be touching, but would be a scary feature for a practicing chiropractor. Perhaps this costume would be better for a gardener or hairdresser.

2. Michael Myers - Not Mike Myers from in Shrek and Austin Powers, but the one from the movie Halloween, that walks around with a big butcher knife. It’s certainly an easy costume to make, but probably not a good idea in a chiropractic office. It’s kind of difficult to comfortably lie face down when you know your doctor has a huge blade in his hand. Gives new meaning to the complaint, “Doc, I’ve got this knifelike pain in my shoulder...”

3. Wolverine - While most superheroes make great costume ideas for chiropractors, Wolverine from X-Men is probably not one of them. Wolverine does possess keen senses and a healing factor, but he also has razor-sharp retractable claws – not the most practical accessory for a gentle spinal adjustment.

4. Captain Hook - This one is not as frightening, but still not too functional for correcting spinal subluxations. At least Dr. French would have one good hand with this costume.

5. Freddy Krueger - The scary character from Friday the 13th and a Nightmare on Elm Street fits the trend of costumes that involve sharp fingers or extensions on the hands. These are all certain comfort killers for anyone coming in to receive a relaxing spinal adjustment and will probably not going to work well for the chiropractor.

So what are the best costumes for chiropractors? How about a bunny rabbit, or Winnie the Pooh, Scooby Doo, or some other furry and cuddly creature? What costume would you like to see your doctor wear?

Have a safe and fun Halloween!

It happens every year. A nasty 24-hour stomach bug passes from person to person, taking us down one by one. All you can do is wait and hope that you and your family escape the trail of sickness this time. Or is that all you can do?

You’ll be glad to know that you can do more than try to keep the germs at bay than washing your hands and avoiding crowds. You can also boost your body’s natural defenses, so that when it does encounter illness-inducing bacteria, it has the strength to fight it off.

Your immune system works around the clock to patrol every nook and cranny of your body, attacking, neutralizing, and destroying useless and dangerous things inside you. This incredible healing ability protects you from the germs, viruses, bacteria, infections, and inflammation that threaten your health.

So what can you do to strengthen and support your immune system? Nourishing your body with nutrient-rich foods like vegetables, fruits, and whole grains helps lay the foundation for a strong defense. Regular exercise also keeps your body in top condition for fighting off disease.

Another important factor is your emotions. According to Bernie Siegel, MD, unexpressed feelings depress immune response, (reference 1)while genuine relationships strengthen the immune system (reference 2). So whether it’s fostering family and friendships, or spending time with a beloved pet, keep your connections strong and happy, and your immune system will be, too.

In addition to taking care of yourself and your relationships, chiropractic care is another natural support to your immune system. Protecting your central nervous system with correct spinal alignment is a powerful immune system “wake up call.” When you are misaligned, it causes undue nerve stress that impairs immune function. (reference 3)

Periodic chiropractic adjustments to correct subluxations in your spine will help your immune system to function closer to its optimum level. Come in to Livewell Family Chiropractic Center and let Dr. French help you boost your immune system so you can avoid “what’s going around!”

With October being National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it’s hard to miss all the pink paraphernalia being displayed, promoted, and sold. Education about prevention and early detection is good, as well as helpful information for the diagnosed and survivors.

To participate in this worthy event, we’d like to offer information on how chiropractic care can support women’s heath, whether you are trying your best to prevent breast cancer or cope with it.

People normally don’t think of chiropractic in their plan to avoid or beat cancer, but it can truly play a significant role.
For those who want to live an anti-cancer lifestyle, regular chiropractic adjustments support the proper function of all your internal organs, boost your immune system, and ensure healthy nerve supply from the brain through the spinal column. When those things are working in harmony, it creates an environment in your body that is not favorable to the cell mutations that cause cancer.

For women battling the disease, studies have shown that chiropractic therapy can help relieve headaches and back and joint pain in women who have had breast cancer treatment. Chiropractic adjustments also support a suppressed immune system and correct subluxations so that the body can begin to heal.

For the survivors, chiropractic can assist recovery from surgery or other scarring procedures, and speed up the process of getting back into an active, healthy life. Chiropractic adjustments also help to prevent recurrence of the cancer, in the same ways that it helps prevent cancer in healthy women.

All of our lives have been touched by breast cancer. You undoubtedly know someone who has or had the life-threatening disease. Do them a considerable favor and recommend chiropractic care as a part of their health-seeking protocol. Dr. French would love to speak to anyone with breast cancer concerns and develop a personalized chiropractic care plan.

Chronic illnesses, infectious diseases, infant mortality, and preventable hospitalizations all still plague our population. Unprecedented and unchecked growth in the prevalence of obesity has also dramatically affected the overall health of the United States. The current economic climate also increases the challenge of maintaining health. Lack of health insurance coverage not only inhibits people from getting the proper care when needed but also reduces access to necessary preventive care to curtail or minimize future illnesses.

What has gotten us so sick? Some influence can be attributed to lifestyle factors like poor diet, little exercise, smoking, and binge drinking. Other factors are more difficult to control, like poverty, air pollution, and complications from drugs and medical procedures. The drivers of illness are many and diverse.

The good news is that there are things you can do to help reverse the trend. The United States has the potential to improve its overall health if individuals focus on reducing important risk factors. This means not only doing what you can to prevent causes of ailments, but also being informed about the best ways to treat dis-ease and poor health.

Tune in to listen to Dr. French on KOKC Saturday morning at 8:00 with Dr. Mary Schrick. While we can all appreciate the benefits of the advances in mobile devices, we’ve all seen the drawbacks before.
It’s not uncommon to see a group of people sitting together, yet all looking down at their smart phones, texting, emailing, gaming, reading, and watching. More than just a distraction from real-world interaction, looking down at your phone for extended periods can be physically harmful as well.
Text neck is the slang term for a condition called Forward Head Posture. Common symptoms may include tightness across the shoulders, headaches, and neck soreness.
A chiropractor in Webster Groves says more teenagers are finding their way to his office because of text neck. He says it can lead to irreversible arthritic degeneration if left untreated. Permanent damage to your neck and spine is quite a grave risk. This kind of degeneration can make you feel a lot older than you are.
A study that was performed a few years ago found that for every inch the head was shifted forward off center, it actually increases the weight and the demand on the spine by 10 pounds. So just a head shifted forward an extra inch to an inch and a half is going to be applying 20-25 pounds of extra pressure around the neck area. That’s essentially like wearing a truck tire around your neck.
So what can we do to prevent text neck? Hold your mobile device in a raised position while using it, and avoid long or frequent periods of looking down, even if it’s to read a book or magazine. Encourage your family to do the same, especially teens who use mobile phones for entertainment more excessively. Check with Dr. French for exercises you can do to help alleviate text neck and protect against further damage.
Cell phones don’t have to be a pain in the neck!

First female grad of West Point promoted to Brigadier General supports access to chiropractic care for all U.S. soldiers

CARMICHAEL, Calif. (BUSINESS WIRE) The Foundation for Chiropractic Progress, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to increasing public awareness of chiropractic, announced today that Retired U.S. Army Brigadier General Becky Halstead will serve as its spokesperson and share with the public her positive experiences with chiropractic care. Halstead served 27 years with the United States Army, is the first female in U.S. history to command in combat at the strategic level by commanding the highest level organization for logistics (3rd Corps Support Command) in the Combat Theater of Iraq, and is a recipient of the 2007 national Women’s History Project Generations of Women Moving History Forward.

"The year I was deployed to Iraq I missed my friends and family -- and my chiropractor!" asserts Halstead, noting that chiropractic care is available through the U.S. armed forces healthcare delivery system at approximately 25 percent of the military treatment facilities.

“Personally, I hope someday that chiropractic care becomes part of all our military's healthcare programs, so that all soldiers can have the opportunity to benefit from the care that only a doctor of chiropractic can provide.”

Halstead says that the hands-on, active care of doctors of chiropractic and their advice on a healthy lifestyle are essential to our military men and women.

“I have always been grateful for the care of my chiropractor and feel it is an essential part of not only preventing more serious health concerns, but also assisting in the recovery from strains and other injuries,” adds Halstead. “My chiropractor is genuinely interested in me, my life and my health, and takes a holistic approach to my wellness.”

She says that time spent with her chiropractor is better than any drug she has ever had prescribed, noting, “Listening appears to be a major tool of my chiropractor’s doc kit in order to get to the root cause of my pain and discomfort without just masking the problem with drugswith all their side effects.”

Halstead explains that a chiropractor “… allows me to be part of the solution and encourages me to be part of my own wellness plan. One of the greatest emotions in the world is relief, and that is exactly what my chiropractor provides me—a tremendous amount of relief from my pain.”

Halstead graduated from West Point in 1981 as a U.S. Army Ordnance officer with B.S. in Engineering. She also earned an M.S. in National Resource Strategy (Advanced Manufacturing) from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, National Defense University, and an M.S. in Advanced Military Studies (Visionary Leadership) from the Army Command and General Staff College. Many people have very passionate opinions either against or in favor of vaccinations. It is easy to get caught up in either side, or to become confused somewhere in the middle, because it is not a black and white issue.

Fact: vaccines have prevented a multitude of illnesses in countless people. Fact: vaccines are essentially poison to the body.

Vaccines work by introducing a weakened disease-causing organism, usually through an injection. The immunogen isn't strong enough to cause the disease, but it is enough to trick the body into developing antibodies, which are supposed to fight off the illness. The body then "thinks" that it's had the disease.

In addition to intentionally exposing the body to disease, vaccines also contain numerous harmful substances such as mercury, aluminum, and formaldehyde, as well as other preservatives, additives, and manufacturing residuals.

So it is a question of which presents a higher risk: the possibility of contracting a disease, or the potential for a vaccine’s toxic ingredients to compromise your health.

The best approach is always to make an informed decision based on what is right or you and your family. There are many elements to consider, including socioeconomic and lifestyle factors like nutrition and hygiene.1,2 It seems that universal immunization of the population is unnecessary and irresponsible, but selective vaccination might have benefits.

The reasons one might choose to vaccinate are obvious: disease prevention. However, the negative effects of this choice are not as well-known. Today we’ll consider some information that will hopefully shed some light on the sensitive subject.

Vaccine Failures

In the scientific literature, evidence exists documenting vaccine failures. Vaccine failures have two major causes. The primary cause is a failure to develop immunity to the vaccine, and the secondary cause is due to a loss of immunity after initial waning immunity. It is difficult to distinguish the two, but despite a high rate of vaccine coverage in the population, sustained outbreaks have been observed with measles, mumps, pertussis, and haemophilus influenza that bring about the question of the efficacy of vaccines. 3-6

Adverse Reactions

Adverse reactions have been documented, including seizures, rash, edema, meningitis, pyrexia, fatigue, nervous and musculoskeletal symptoms.7 Even more alarming, however, is the finding in the past few years of vaccine-induced autoimmune disorders. The pathogenesis of vaccine-induced autoimmunity may be similar to the mechanisms that have been proposed to explain the viral autoimmunity association.8

Some examples of autoimmune disorders attributed to vaccines are:

· immune thrombocytopenic purpura and diabetes mellitus (from MMR vaccine)9,10
· Guillain-Barre syndrome, reactive arthritis, and vasculitis (from influenza vaccine)11
· multiple sclerosis (from swine flu vaccine)12
· myasthenia gravis, Reiter's syndrome, and systemic lupus (from hepatitis B vaccine)13-14

Antigenic Variability

Viruses are known to evolve in response to immunologic pressure.15 The resurgence of certain diseases in the United States and globally may be due to antigenic changes in wild-type microbes. Vaccine pressure may have driven virus evolution a step forward and at a faster rate. Viruses are quite adept at evading or subverting stress thrown at them.16 With respect to long-term effects, it is suggested that future variants may accumulate enough mutations that vaccine-induced immunity may no longer prevent so-called vaccine-preventable diseases.

It’s Your Call

Only you can make the best decision for your family. It is constructive to question conventional practice and consider all the factors before choosing the approach that will best protect your family’s health.

There are many ways to enhance the body’s natural defenses against disease through a holistic approach (chiropractic adjustments, nutrition, hygiene, etc.). It’s important to know your options.

Dr. French will be offering an informative class on vaccines tomorrow night from 6:30 to 8:30 at the Comfort Inn & Suites Quail Springs (13501 North Highland Park Blvd, OKC, OK 73120). Everyone in attendance will receive the book Vaccination is not Immunization (with over 250 references) by Tim O'Shea. Come educate yourself!

It’s been a long day at work, and you’ve been sitting in front of the computer for hours without a break. Your wrist aches, your fingers are numb and tingly, your arm is sore and weak, and your neck feels stiff. Sound familiar?

Whether from excessive mouse and keyboard action or another repetitive action, overuse of the wrist can sometimes leave you with a pain that stretches from your neck to your fingertips. Physical therapy, anti-inflammatories, splints, exercise, and better ergonomics can all help, but none of those solutions addresses the root of the problem.

The pain and discomfort stem from the bones of the wrist becoming misaligned and compressing the mediun nerve in its tunnel at the wrist. Overuse of the wrist and elbow in an overflexed or extended position causes soft tissue breakdown, which results in the bone misalignment, inflammation, and nerve compression.

This pressure needs to be relieved so that the nerve is no longer agitated, and that begins with proper alignment. Chiropractors do not just specialize in correcting subluxations in the spine; they can also adjust bones in your extremities to relieve undue pressure to the vital nerves there.

To prevent overuse injury in your wrist and elbow, it is also important to maintain alignment in your spine. Researchers have demonstrated that nerve compression in the neck blocks cellular material t the distal nerve, making it more susceptible to injury at the wrist.1

It’s not just extended computer work that puts you at risk for carpal tunnel. Musicians, painters, waiters, cashiers, carpenters, and many other professions perform repeated motions with the arm and wrist. But you don’t have to suffer. Call Livewell Family Chiropractic Center and let Dr. French help you find relief.

Science has shown that chiropractic care offers a powerful solution to this epidemic.

The nervous system controls digestive function just as it controls all other vital processes in the body. As we have learned previously, different regions of the spine correspond to different organs and parts of the body. With the digestive system, there are several areas in the spinal column that house nerves important for digestion. The vagus nerve, which runs near the atlas bone (near the neck) innervates all the major organs of digestive function. The sympathetic nerves, which come out of the thoracic and lumbar (mid and lower back) regions, are also important to stimulate the digestive process. Spinal misalignment in any of these regions can lead to neurological compromise and altered digestive function.

Chiropractors can locate any spinal misalignments and correct the subluxations, restoring nerve supply to the deficient organs. This approach honors the body's innate ability to heal, enhancing organ function and quality of life.

Several studies have demonstrated the power of chiropractic adjustments to help individuals with digestive disturbances. In a published case study, a young woman had been afflicted with IBS symptoms once or twice a week for 5 years. After one adjustment she noticed an easing of symptoms and within a short time all her digestive problems disappeared and did not return.

Another study showed how chiropractic care is effective for infants with constipation. Researchers chose infants who were experiencing infrequent bowel movements. Parents of these infants had tried – without success – several different remedies recommended by medical staff. The infants began wellness-oriented chiropractic for periods ranging from three weeks to three months, and by the end of the study they all had bowel movements at least once every day.

It is well-documented that subluxations within specific areas of the spine can prevent the bowel from functioning properly. Regular chiropractic care can help patients establish a more natural rhythm of comfortable, effortless elimination. If you experience digestive discomfort, try chiropractic for relief.
The answer is: yes. Exercising and stretching are an important element of any treatment plan. Below are three exercises and stretches you can do at home to help relieve back pain and support the health of your spine.

Patients with lumbar region (lower back) pain need to strengthen weak muscles and lengthen tight muscles in the back. The first exercise, called “cat/camel,” does just that. To perform this exercise you will start on your hands and knees. Once in position, arch your middle back toward the ceiling like a cat arching their back and curl your head forward, bringing your chin to your chest. Hold this “cat” position for a count of five seconds. Next, flatten your middle back, looking up with your head and arch your lower back like a camel. Remain in the “camel” position for a count of five seconds. Repeat both motions 3 times for a total of 30 seconds. Perform this exercise twice per day.

The second strengthening exercising is called “bird dog.” This exercise also begins on your hands and knees. Once in position, tighten your abdominals by sucking your navel towards your backbone and bracing your abdominals as if you were about to get punched in your belly. You should be able to hold this contracted position and still breathe normally. While holding your abdominals tight, extend your right arm straight out and at the same time extend your left leg straight out. Your arm and leg should be as straight as possible all while maintaining a contracted abdominal core. Hold this position for five seconds and then return to the starting position. Next, repeat on the opposite side by extending your left arm and right leg straight out and holding for a count of five seconds. Repeat these two positions, 6 times total.
A final exercise to reduce back pain is called a “side plank.” To perform a side plank you will start out laying on the floor on your right side. Now, lean up on your right forearm, keeping your elbow under your shoulder. While supporting your body weight on your forearm and feet, draw your hips and legs up so that your body forms a straight line from head to toe. Hold this position for 30 seconds, while keeping your abdominals contracted. (Suck your navel towards your backbone, and continue to breathe normally). Release and rest briefly, then switch sides so that you are laying on your left side and supporting your “plank” with your left forearm for 30 seconds. Perform this exercise 4 times, for a total of two sets on each side.

You can do these exercises several times a week to assist in relieving back discomfort and to support your recovery. These exercise will also improve your posture and improve your overall health and fitness.

Back to School

It’s that time of year! School is starting, and all the kids, teens, and tweens are gearing up to hit the books again. As a parent, you want to make sure that your children can tackle the new curriculum with clear thinking and focus. We all know that adequate sleep and a healthy breakfast contribute to better performance in school, but there is another foundational piece that has a profound effect on a student’s concentration.

Vertebral subluxations (spinal misalignment), cause changes in body chemistry because they disrupt the flow of neural signals down the spinal cord. Any change in body chemistry, whether it is due to over-the-counter medication, alcohol, or even poor eating habits, is going to adversely affect mental acuity, memory, reasoning ability, reaction times, and ability to focus and concentrate. Regular chiropractic adjustments can help improve concentration and mental clarity by relieving adverse pressure on the spinal column and freeing up flow of communication in the nervous system.

In addition to correcting current misalignment – an inevitable result of living an active life and enjoying a playful, energetic summer – it is also important to prevent future stress on the spine whenever possible. One precaution that is especially relevant during the school year is guarding against back strain from heavy school bags. Make sure that your kids’ bags are not overloaded, and adjust the straps of a backpack so that it sits higher on the back rather than hanging below the waist. Also, encourage kids to wear both straps of a backpack instead of throwing the bag over one shoulder.

And remember, these tips do not just apply to young students. Adults should also be aware of unbalanced strain from carrying heavy bags. Just about anyone, from working professionals and full-time moms to college students and lively seniors, would benefit from improved mental clarity through chiropractic adjustments.
