The current state of U.S. Health is disturbing. Chronic illnesses, infectious diseases, infant mortality, and preventable hospitalizations all still plague our population. Unprecedented and unchecked growth in the prevalence of obesity has also dramatically affected the overall health of the United States. The current economic climate also increases the challenge of maintaining health. Lack of health insurance coverage not only inhibits people from getting the proper care when needed but also reduces access to necessary preventive care to curtail or minimize future illnesses.
What has gotten us so sick? Some influence can be attributed to lifestyle factors like poor diet, little exercise, smoking, and binge drinking. Other factors are more difficult to control, like poverty, air pollution, and complications from drugs and medical procedures. The drivers of illness are many and diverse.
The good news is that there are things you can do to help reverse the trend. The United States has the potential to improve its overall health if individuals focus on reducing important risk factors. This means not only doing what you can to prevent causes of ailments, but also being informed about the best ways to treat dis-ease and poor health.
