It’s that time of year! School is starting, and all the kids, teens, and tweens are gearing up to hit the books again. As a parent, you want to make sure that your children can tackle the new curriculum with clear thinking and focus. We all know that adequate sleep and a healthy breakfast contribute to better performance in school, but there is another foundational piece that has a profound effect on a student’s concentration.
Vertebral subluxations (spinal misalignment), cause changes in body chemistry because they disrupt the flow of neural signals down the spinal cord. Any change in body chemistry, whether it is due to over-the-counter medication, alcohol, or even poor eating habits, is going to adversely affect mental acuity, memory, reasoning ability, reaction times, and ability to focus and concentrate. Regular chiropractic adjustments can help improve concentration and mental clarity by relieving adverse pressure on the spinal column and freeing up flow of communication in the nervous system.
In addition to correcting current misalignment – an inevitable result of living an active life and enjoying a playful, energetic summer – it is also important to prevent future stress on the spine whenever possible. One precaution that is especially relevant during the school year is guarding against back strain from heavy school bags. Make sure that your kids’ bags are not overloaded, and adjust the straps of a backpack so that it sits higher on the back rather than hanging below the waist. Also, encourage kids to wear both straps of a backpack instead of throwing the bag over one shoulder.
And remember, these tips do not just apply to young students. Adults should also be aware of unbalanced strain from carrying heavy bags. Just about anyone, from working professionals and full-time moms to college students and lively seniors, would benefit from improved mental clarity through chiropractic adjustments.
