Fitness for Wellness

Regular physical activity is a must for everyone - no matter what age or ability. Unfortunately, approximately 60% of all Americans fail to get the recommended level of vital exercise. Worse yet, 25% of Americans fail to participate in any sort of physical activity. Many studies have shown exercise can significantly increase energy levels. Ironically, the number one excuse for not exercising is a lack of energy. If only they knew how energizing it can be to elevate your heart rate through healthy exercise.

In addition to cardiovascular exercise, the body benefits greatly from resistance training, such as through the use of free weights or nautilus equipment. Increasing strength prevents injuries and improves physical performance, and building muscle aids in weight management. Resistance training is not just for bodybuilders who wish to increase their muscles’ size, but rather is for anyone wishing to keep their body strong, healthy, and fit.

You can simultaneously provide a strength and cardiovascular workout for your body by keeping a minimum rest-time between sets of resistance exercises. By moving fairly quickly from set to set, a moderate heart rate can be achieved and maintained throughout the entire workout. This means you gain benefit for your muscles and your heart (the most important muscle of all).

Studies conducted on exercise have shown the following benefits, among many:
Cardiovascular Health reduction in LDL (“bad” cholesterol) increase in HDL (“good” cholesterol) increased heart strength and health increases V02 max (maximum oxygen uptake) Emotional Health and Quality of Life anxiety reduction stress reduction increased sense of well being increased self-confidence Disease Prevention reduced disease and sickness reduction of fall injuries in seniors diabetes prevention in the aging Weight Management reduction of body fat prevention of obesity Size and Strength Gains increased physical performance increased strength increased speed increased muscle tone Functioning and Quality of Life in the Elderly increased mobility and independence in seniors life extension Pregnancy increased on-time deliveries increased protection from miscarriages
It’s easy to see that fitness is critical to your health and wellness. Why not take advantage of the spring weather and get outside for some active fun! Take the kids to the park, or the dogs for a walk, swim a few laps in a pool, or start a game of frisbee at a family picnic. Playing ball of any kind is popular with those young and old. If the gym is where you choose to exercise, consider inviting a partner to join you for added support and fun.

Once you start leading a more active and energetic lifestyle, you’ll find it hard to stop. Incorporating exercise into your life is a decision you won’t regret. Let’s get moving!
